There are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book, The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S. incarceration rates, Arizona’s ban of books, and songs such as muse. All of these texts have strong evidence how the Giver society parallels our society.
In an article about Edward Snowden it parallels Giver because both Jonas and Snowden are whistleblowers. Snowden leaked information about how the government information such as how the government ordered Verizon to hand over a million Americans phone records to the National Security Agency. The reason why this parallels the Giver is he leaked information just like Jonas did. Both Snowden and Jonas felt that it wasn’t right of what they had done.
The article about incarcerating the population of the U.S. parallels the Giver because it explores control. One supporting detail is the numbers easily top two million, 25% of the entire world’s prisoners. Another example is most people that are in prison are convicted with drugs. My final piece of evidence is that the U.S. tops every other nation with prisoners. In all the article about incarcerating the population parallels the Giver because it explores control.
The article about the banned books in Arizona parallels the Giver because they don’t have books in their community. A reason why this parallels the Giver because Mexican American books are banned for them also Jonas’s community books are banned for them. So in all the ban on Mexican American books parallels the Giver because the schools of the Toucan district cannot read those kind of books just like the Giver society doesn’t have any books.
The song “Muse” parallels the Giver because just like Jonas they don’t like people are keeping secrets from them. In the song one of the lyrics is “endless red tape keeping the truth from us.” Another example why this song parallels the Giver is they are rising up and starting to take action just like Jonas and the Giver did to show all the others in the community the memories. My final piece of detail is they talk about others controlling others this happens in the Giver too.
In all there are many examples in our media that parallel the Giver. No matter if it is about Snowden leaking information or incarating the population of the U.S. Other examples like the ban on Mexican American books in Arizona and the song “Muse”.
